This session will provide guidance and information preparing teachers to administer the 2020 classroom based state HGSS assessment.  Performance level descriptions, draft rubrics, and sample tasks will be presented.  Teacher will receive information and be able to pose questions.

Social emotional learning and civic engagement are paramount in classrooms today.  In this session we will explore what you already do and connect this to ideas to strengthen these skills for your students.  Come explore the books on Epic! and learn how to pair these with current fiction and chapter books you are using in your classroom to support social emotional learning and civic engagement.  We will explore pairing nonfiction selections with what you are already doing to engage readers, enhance prior knowledge, and allow students to connect globally for civic engagement.

Counting on People: Elementary Activities for Global Citizenship
Engage in human geography and civics activities to encourage environmental stewardship in young learners. In this workshop, participants will discover hands-on activities designed to connect students to the world around them – both people and the environment. They will come away with ideas for helping students to explore the fundamentals of human geography including how populations grow and use resources, the importance of healthy ecosystems and healthy communities. At the same time, these activities build 21st Century Skills. Engage in role-playing simulations, concept-mapping and inquiry-based activities that work well with all kinds of learners. Get Out The Vote - Historically Speaking
Engage with primary sources from the Dole Archives! Investigate constituent letters from Kansans in 1969 about changing the voting age from 21 to 18 with the 26th Amendment. A mock debate allows your students to deliberate on the “Senate floor” and advance discussion on voting rights with valid points for each side. Other primary source activities will be presented such as additional student-written constituent letters, other research topics, and a new endeavor from the Dole Archives – an archives-oriented digital breakout game.

The Secret to Organizing and Implementing School-Wide Civic Engagement at Your School
Learn how one elementary school and their community worked together to implement  school wide civic engagement to include lessons on leadership, digital citizenship,  soft skills,  civil discourse,  and community service in small groups of 10-12 students. Each group included  3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students led by a staff member.  Watch as students go through the process of choosing, voting on, and completing a project for either our school, our community, or our world.  You will receive a QR code that will connect you with a presentation, pictures, videos, and lesson plans so your school can get started too.
